Arizona Governor Slated for Homeland Security Post
Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano has been chosen to head the Department of Homeland Security in President-elect Barack Obama’s administration. Napolitano’s appointment will not be confirmed by the Senate until after Obama’s inauguration on January 20, 2009.
Napolitano is in the second year of her second four-year term as Arizona’s governor. She will not resign her position until her appointment to the Department of Homeland Security is confirmed. Governor Napolitano plans to conduct business as usual until that time.
Since the Grand Canyon State does not have a Lieutenant Governor, Napolitano, a Democrat, would be succeeded by current Arizona Secretary of State Jan Brewer, a Republican.
